Botanical Name: Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica'Native Region/Environment: Bangladesh, Borneo, India, Java, Philippines, Sumatra, Thailand and Taiwan. Sun/Light: Bright, indirect light to mimic the native understory environment. Temperature: Indoor Houseplant temperature range of 65-85F; Outdoor in USDA Zones 11-12. Water: Allow soil to dry to touch between watering - then thoroughly moisten soil by allowing water to run through until absorbed, then drain freely. Avoid frequent, uneven watering or standing water. Soil: Organically rich and porous. Avoid standing water for extended periods. Growth Pattern: Evergreen perennial climbing vine in native warm, moist and humid habitats. The vines grow root nodes about every inch where sticky anchoring roots grow that attach to virtually any firm surface. Leaf nodes are grown just next to the root node, but on the outward facing side of the vine. Slow grower. Mature Size: In native ranges it may grow vines of up to 10 feet. In cultivation it rarely exceeds 3 feet. If growing on a flat surface, as opposed from a hanging basket, the leaves will eventually 'shingle' and lay flat on the surface to maximize sun exposure. Attributes: Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' is simply dramatic. Green heart shaped leaves with a pewter grey to silver in streaks. This trailing vine does very well in hanging baskets, on a table top pots as a crawler or trained to climb a pole, wall or bookcase. The leaves are slightly rigid upon maturity. Pot: 3.5" or 4" |
Identifications can become complicated since botanically it is a Scindapsus pictus, yet the common names are pothos, which are Epipremnum.
To add to the confusion, the names 'Silver pothos' and 'Satin pothos', which are common names for Scindapsus 'Exotica', refer to the same plant and are not different species. Whereas, 'Silver Lady', 'Silvery Anne', or 'Silver Splash'-each of which are different cultivars.
All scindapsus species are natural air purifiers removing formaldehyde, benzene and other VOC's common in indoor air.
This plant may have a degree of toxicity that may cause illness or discomfort if ingested. It is grown and sold for Ornamental purposes and not intended as a food nor fodder. Additionally, contact with the sap of this plant may cause irritation or discomfort.
